Half an hour later, Katie returned carrying a large bag which she emptied onto the bed, then she noticed his face and stopped.

‘What’s the matter?’

‘I’ve just remembered I’m on probation.’

‘So, don’t commit any crimes and you’ll be fine.’

‘No, it’s not that. I’m not supposed to spend a night away from home without telling my supervisor.’

‘Are you wearing a tracking device?’

‘No, of course not.’

‘Do you have to check in with her before you got to bed?’

‘Now you’re being ridiculous.’

‘My point is she won’t know where you are, will she?’

‘No, I suppose not. I didn’t think of that.’

‘Or perhaps you think I’m going to tell her?’

‘And why would you do that?’

‘Exactly. And if she did somehow find out, I can vouch for the fact it wasn’t planned, and I’m sure the landlord would verify what’s happened.’

Flutter sighed. He didn’t look convinced.

‘Look,’ said Katie. ‘I understand you don’t want to step out of line, but it’s not as if you did it on purpose, is it? It’s my fault we’re stuck here, and I promise I’ll make sure they know that if it comes to it. I’m sure they’d take such a mitigating factor into consideration.’

‘Yeah. I suppose you’re right,’ admitted Flutter. ‘Anyway, there’s not much point in worrying about it when I can’t change it, is there?’

He managed a smile and nodded towards Katie’s bag.

‘What have you got in there, then?’

‘I found a shop,’ she said. ‘They had toothbrushes and toothpaste. I also got you a tee shirt, but I had to guess at the size. You can take it back if it’s too small.’

She passed him the tee shirt, and he pulled it on. It fitted perfectly.

‘Wow, thanks. How much do I owe you?’

‘After you paid for the room? I don’t think so. They’ve also got jeans and hiking trousers, but I wasn’t sure what you’d want. They’re open until 7 pm if you want to look.’

Flutter knew a hint when he heard one.

‘I’ll have a look while you’re in the shower. I’d better call Doris, and let her know she’s dog-sitting overnight.’

‘She won’t mind, will she?’

‘No, but I don’t like to take her for granted.’
